Almost 25 years ago Ethernet was introduced to the plant floor, giving the OT space the ability to easily share device data, which opened the door for innovation. Fast forward to today and plant floor networks have made evolutionary improvements in network speed, enhanced protocols, and improved cyber security measures, but the fundamental architecture of an Ethernet-based network has not evolved for over two decades. Without revolutionary change, network management best practices cannot scale to meet the needs of today’s digital transformation challenges including hardening networks against cyber attacks. This leads us to the question – what’s next for industrial Ethernet?
