Understanding Nation-State Attacks

For the past three years the world has been going through an unprecedented increase in malicious cyber activity. Ransomware has mined a source of money that didn’t exist just a few years ago. The emergence of nation states using cyber-attacks and breaches to further their agendas has caused an explosion of new threats against which every network must now have defences that work. Read More

A New ICS Security Pardigm

Yesterday I took a quick drive up to Atlanta to visit a cybersecurity startup to view a demo of a new ICS security tool. I was introduced to Roger Hill, the founder of Veracity, a couple of weeks ago at an Atlanta cybersecurity meetup. Top 5 Actions to Prepare for the Next CrashOverride-Style Attack

Imagine a major capital city with a population between that of Paris and Rome losing a large part of its electrical power a few days before the end of year festivities, all because of malware infection. This case is real. On December 17-18, 2016, Kiev, capital of Ukraine, suffered severe power outage. The indications are that the power cuts were caused by the CrashOverride virus (also known as Industroyer). However, Kiev may be only one of any number of targets. CrashOverride has been built to be easily adaptable to other power supply infrastructures in the world. It’s time to take defensive action. Read More

Paul Myer talks w/Sean Martin during Black Hat 2017, discussing securing OT, Operational Technology

As an industry, we often focus on information technology and information security. And, while the media as a whole covers stories of denial of service attacks and power grid shut-downs, as a general rule, the industry seems to be obsessed with protecting information – protecting the traditional IT systems that manage that data – intellectual property, customer data, financials, and more. However, based on a conversation I had with Paul Myer, CEO of Veracity Industrial Networks, that needs to change – we need more attention paid to the operation technology – or “OT” space. Listen in as I catch up with Paul during Black Hat 2017 – I suspect you’ll look at cybersecurity in a different way after hearing what he has to say… Listen Here

Agency Funding Doesn’t Slow Down to Cyber Startups

Two federal agencies issued funding this month worth about $5 million to cybersecurity firms to help the government protect electrical grids and the government’s expanding Internet of Things network.

The funding isn’t a relatively large amount, but it shows the government is continuing to keep the spigot open for startups that want to work to protect the government’s digital infrastructure. This engagement will remain important in light of the federal hiring freeze that has made it nearly impossible for federal agencies to attract internal help… Read More

Industry Hardens Cybersecurity Defenses Against Hackers And Spies

Food defense takes many forms: food safety programs, physical facility security, counterfeit goods, to name a few. One of the most challenging to manage is the growing threat to cybersecurity.

Closed loop data exchange is the default defense against hackers, industrial spies and other outsiders. Food and beverage manufacturers have been willing to forego benefits like third-party monitoring and troubleshooting of equipment and infrastructure performance if it meant granting access to internal communications systems. But as customer demands for more information mount and a workforce of digital natives who expect to access data via smart phones and other remote devices moves into place, the ability to just say no to the connected enterprise becomes less realistic.
